The Causes of Pain During Intercourse

This painful episode during intercourse is called a dyspareunia. It may be triggered by physical or emotional causes. To answer the question of what really caused the pain, one must see a doctor. The doctor may then identify the cause and help you in curing the pain during intercourse. Physical pain that can be caused inside the vagina includes:

-          Infections on the vagina – STDs (Sexually Transmitted Disease) like herpes and chlamydia and also yeast infections. Abnormal vaginal discharges, burns and itches are also known to cause the pain

-          Vaginismus  – These are painful muscle spasms that women may experience during sexual intercourse. It can also deny penetration of her partner. Causes of this may range from infections and damages such as scars to fear of intercourse and history of rape or sexual abuse which is also the cause of emotional pain. check out my vaginismus treatment post.

-          Lack of lubrication – This is perhaps the most common cause of pain during sexual intercourse. Normally, a woman’s vagina secretes natural lubrication during arousal that will help her during sexual intercourse so that it will be easier for a man to penetrate her vagina. Causes of lack of lubrication include the inability of the vagina to respond to sexual stimulation and therefore the inability to secrete the natural lubricants

Causes of the pain in the pelvic area include:

-          Urinary Tract Infection – Or UTIs, is caused by bacteria and characterized by an inflammation of the urethra. This can cause a pain in the pelvis after sex.

-          Irregular Growths – This may include pelvic tumors, endometriosis, fibroid tumors, and ovarian cysts. These may affect the sexual performance of both the male and female who are engaged on it.

Other Causes of Pain During Intercourse

Other causes of pain are overstress, fatigue, low self-esteem and problems with relationship. Others such as certain types of drugs like sedatives, anti-depressant, birth control pills and even illegal ones and other medications may have an impact on each person’s sexual performance.

It is really important that you know the cause of the pain as soon as possible to get it treated early. Some women may be shy about sharing this problem with other people, even to the doctors, as it is really embarrassing for them to show or talk about it. Some may even resort to self-treatment like taking pills or other “medicines” that may cure the pain. This has no effect and may even endanger their life. The doctor is the only one who knows what to do about pain during intercourse and a couple must act immediately as the cure is not simple.
